Fried Sweet Potato Wedges with Sambal Matah Bawang

Lately, it's the sweet potato season, so I can find many sweet potatoes now.  My family also send me sweet potato often. 

I think what should I do with these sweet potatoes? Then suddenly I remember when I was still in elementary school, I liked fried sweet potato wedges and dipping them with sambal matah.

Sambal matah is one of many popular raw spicy sauces in Indonesia, especially in Bali. Sambal matah bawang is the best with these sweet potato wedges.

Honestly, I don't remember the last time I tried this dish, it's been a long time, luckily I still remember the recipe, and the taste is still the same. The taste of the sambal matah is not only spicy but also sweet, perfect for those of you who don't like spicy.

Main ingredients:

• 5 medium sweet potatoes
• The oil for frying 

Sambal matah:

• 5 cloves of garlic
• 5 cloves of shallot
• 8 chilies
• 1/2 tsp salt
• 1 tbsp sugar
• 3-4 tbsp hot oil 

How to cook:

  1. Peel and cut the sweet potato into wedges.
  2. Fry the sweet potato until brown and the surface is slightly crispy.
  3. Make a sambal matah by using mortar and pestle. Crush the onion, garlic, and chili, it doesn't need to be smooth.
  4. Add sugar, salt, and hot oil to the pestle, mix well and then adjust the taste.
  5. Serve the sweet potato wedges and sambal match to be dipping sauce.


These fried sweet potato wedges can be a delicious snack while watching TV or other.  The simple processing won't take much time, so you don't have to worry about your time being wasted. 

If you don't like the smell of garlic and onion you can reduce the onion and garlic then adjust the recipe of sambal matah on your own, enjoy!
